TEN YEARS AFTER WITH FRET-KING®
AND VINTAGE®
Fans
of high-speed blues rock guitar antics still go misty-eyed
when they recall the appearance of 60’s English rock
band Ten Years After at the Woodstock festival way back in
1969, catching TYA guitarist and frontman Alvin Lee at the
peak of his playing power, delivering a blistering version
of ‘I’m Going Home’ to the assembled hippy
hordes.
But, as is the way with bands, all good things must come to
an end, and Alvin Lee and TYA eventually went their separate
ways, reformed, split up, etc, leading the band to start the
rather daunting task of finding someone capable of filling
a fairly large pair of baseball boots... Enter young whippersnapper
guitar type, Joe Gooch who’s now stepped up stage front
for the ‘new’ TYA.
“My old school friend Tom Lyons (TYA bass player, Leo's
son) mentioned the band had been trying out guitar players
and they hadn’t yet found someone that fitted in,"
is how Joe found this particular gig on his radar. "I
thought, what the hell, there’s nothing to be lost from
having a go and I sent a demo to the drummer Ric. Next thing
I knew, he was on the phone asking me if I would go to a rehearsal
and took it off from there. All pretty surreal!”
Joe has recently taken to playing Vintage and Fret-King guitars
with the band...
“Initially a friend turned me on to Fret-King, and I
remember checking them out at BBZGuitars. I’ve always
played Strat® type guitars so they immediately appealed
to me and I liked the finishes, but I have to say I wasn’t
expecting them to be so good! I have a few guitars in the
rack but for the last few TYA gigs, I’ve only used the
Fret-King Super 60; I can’t put it down! It sounds great
and has an incredibly stable vibrato system."
"I’ve also been using the new Vintage AV6 Geoff
Whitehorn Signature," adds Joe. "It’s a very
tonally versatile instrument with good upper neck access.”
