Charles Shaar Murray
CROSSTOWN LIGHTNIN'
/ MUSIC JOURNALIST
His first experience in journalism came 1970 when he was asked
to contribute to the satirical magazine Oz. In particular, he
contributed to the notorious Schoolkids OZ issue.
He then wrote for IT (International Times), before decamping to
the New Musical Express in 1972 for which he wrote until around
1986. Subsequently he worked for a number of publications including
Q magazine, Mojo, MacUser, New Statesman, Prospect, The Guardian,
The Observer, The Daily Telegraph, Vogue, Guitarist and The Independent.
CSM started getting serious about playing in the late 1970s, fronting
the post-Feelgoods punk-blues band Blast Furnace & The Heatwaves,
opening shows for the likes of The Clash, The Damned and Boomtown
Rats, and touring with Wilko Johnson, Joe Jackson, The Pirates
and Dave Edmunds/Nick Lowe’s Rockpile.
He’s currently guitarist/vocalist for London blues terrorists
Crosstown Lightnin’, alongside harp maestro Buffalo Bill
Smith and the all-female New York rhythm section The Queens Of
Funk, as well as working with singer/songwriter Peter Conway.
