Clem began his career back in the 1950s backing names
such as Marty Wilde and Billy Fury, before joining Johnny
Kidd and the Pirates and playing on their massive hit
Shaking All Over. He went on to form The Tornados, with
whom he again had a worldwide number one hit with the
instrumental Telstar.
"Reducing the volume of drums for
practising has always been problematic,” says Clem.
“Softapads are very, very good – they actually
feel like you are playing on the normal drum head.”
Incredibly, in the course of his 50 years in the industry
Clem has played on a world record 44 UK number one hit
singles – and he’s still active, having played
on the track No Tears Left To Cry on Paul Weller's latest
album – so it's safe to say the man might know what
he's talking about...
