Gwyn Ashton
Welsh-born Gwyn Ashton migrated to Adelaide,
Australia,
in the '60s, picked up a guitar at 12 and,
from the age of 16, played every seedy bar,
festival and biker show imaginable. After
moving to Sydney in the '80s, he briefly joined
Aussie stalwarts Swanee and Stevie Wright.
With his own band, Ashton carved up stages
nationwide (some of them in the middle of
nowhere, fronted with chicken wire!), sometimes
driving for days through the outback to get
to the next show.
In the early '90s, he recorded his first two
albums in Melbourne, shared stages with Junior
Wells, Rory Gallagher, Steve Morse and Albert
Lee, and played and recorded with Jim Keays
(Master's Apprentices).
In 99 Ashton was invited to tour with Status
Quo on a
15-date UK arena tour, opening each night.
