Phil Solomon
Phil is one of the UK's very top drummers
and was recently honoured by Drummers Incorporated,
the major national society, who have made
him their Vice-President. Born into a musical
family, he became a professional musician
in 1967 and has since covered all musical
genres, from traditional styles right through
to the most modern dance rhythms.
Aside
of work playing with various big bands, Phil
now runs his own band along with his brother,
Trevor, who is a very fine trumpeter. He is
also very much in demand to accompany shows
and cabaret evenings and has worked with Bob
Monkhouse, Lenny Henry and a host of TV stars.
For some years, when available, he has played
in the resident band at the Grand Hotel in
Brighton.
Since the mid 90s he has formed a very close
working relationship with celebrity organist
Michael Wooldridge. This has taken them throughout
England to play shows and concerts. They generally
receive a tremendous ovation and remarks along
the lines of, 'The best night we've been to
in years'. They also work together in jazz
groups and to play the cross section of music
from old time through to pops that is needed
to make functions go with a swing.
Off stage, Phil is renowned as one of the
very best drum teachers in the world and is
often featured in seminars so that other drummers
can have the opportunity to learn from him.
He has written ten tuition books, which are
widely used throughout England and in America,
and has schooled many pupils to become professionals
in their own right: one of his students made
20 albums during 1998. He is the only person
to have twice been asked to adjudicate at
the prestigious National Young Drummer of
the Year Event, held in Birmingham each year.
He has written for both 'Rhythm' and 'Drums
UK' magazines.
